Google has finally revealed that its latest version of Android is Android 9 Pie. This latest version of Android has all kinds of new features such as a brand-new gesture navigation system, new UI elements, app actions and shortcuts in the launcher, new battery life-saving tweaks and several user-focused tweaks with the plan to make this the best version of Android until date.
Besides the name change, there is also a change in the number. Usually the trend was the usage of number as 7.0, 8.0, etc., But Pie is simply referred to as 9. The main focus of the Android Pie is on artificial intelligence.
Android 9 Pie has a new Android Dashboard enabling the users to monitor their usage, and the time they spend on apps, etc. The feature will be fully rolled out in fall.
The Android Pie update is around 1173.0 MB in size. When you download it make sure that you have a stable WiFi connection. The update will be available on Pixel and Pixel 2 devices which include Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The other devices that participated in the Beta program from Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Essential and all qualifying Android One devices, will receive this update by the end of this fall. However, soon after Google announced that Android Pie will be rolling out to its Pixel phones, Essential have announced on Twitter that the Essential Phone is also getting its Pie update the same day.
With Android Pie Google starts to make the software new and different using AI. Google aims to have Android 9 Pie learn from you, so that it can improve on its own. Using Pie, your phone will try to predict what you are going to do next.
Let us take a look at some of the new features
How Android Pie looks and how the user interface helps when we use it depends on the phone. However changes to the look start at the top of the phone. The immediate change is the shift of the clock to the left of the screen while the service indicators like the cell connection and battery remain on the right.
Next there is change in the notifications which is now in a card style interface. The quick settings remain at the top with a new colorful look and noticeable indication. The biggest overall change we see we see again is the inclusion of gestures into the navigation settings to swipe open your recent apps and swipe more to open your application tray.
There is better camera experience. Most of the phones now have two cameras on the rear and Android Pie adds OS-level support for multiple cameras in a great way.
AI driven Adaptive Battery
The battery lives of the phones are always a big concern for people. Android 9 Pie introduces “Adaptive Battery,” by making use of machine learning to understand which apps you use the most and prioritize battery for them accordingly. It will also inform users how long their battery will last based on user’s habits. If the system learns you use an app once and then stop for a while, you will be asked if you would like the system to manage the app. It will close all the apps that are not needed and put it into a very low-power state until the next time you use it. It will help save the battery life.
AI driven Adaptive Brightness
Another feature is controlling how bright the screens are through the Adaptive Brightness. Over time it will learn the kind of brightness levels a user prefers in different light settings, and automatically adjusts it. This Adaptive Brightness feature is also powered by Artificial Intelligence and it has to be turned on from the Settings in Android 9 Pie.
This feature helps users get things done faster by predicting what they need to do next based on their context and displays that action right on their smart phone. Google Assistant plays a large part in the App Actions feature. Some simple actions are when you connect headphones to your phone and the playlist you last listened to will appear.
Security and Privacy
Google claims that Android Pie enables industry-leading hardware security capabilities that allow protecting your sensitive information such as credit card data using a secure, dedicated chip. Other privacy improvements made include “TLS by default and DNS over TLS to help protect all web communications and keep them private.”
In addition to these features, gesture-based system navigation such as a single home button, smart text selection, gesture navigation, and Wi-Fi round-trip time (RTT) are also included.
