Hackers attack Casino through its Fish Tank

Today Internet is part of anything and we can’t imagine a life without Internet. Internet is very useful in daily life and Internet connected technology called the Internet of Things (IoT) with assistants like Siri, smart watches, cars, fridges, lights etc. are in use today.

Large and small enterprises are not able to secure all their smart devices which gives the hackers a chance to take control of such devices.  IoT creates huge risk to the companies and at the same time has the power to distort other enterprises as well.

Here we are coming across one such insecure IoT device connected to the network that has caused severe damages to the organization.

A casino was hacked by cyber attackers through its Internet connected thermometer in an aquarium in the lobby of the casino. This was reported by Nicole Eagan, the CEO of cybersecurity company Darktrace during an event in London on Thursday.

According to Nicole Eagan the hackers made use of a vulnerability in the thermostat to get the control of the network. After gaining the control they managed to access the database of gamblers and then took it across the network, out of the thermostat, and uploaded to the cloud.

The identity of the casino was not revealed, but this incident may have happened last year when Darktrace published a report that refers a thermometer hack of this type on an unnamed casino based in North America.

The usage of IoT technologies have raised questions over latest imaginative cybersecurity threats and this incident is a reminder that the IoT devices are vulnerable to being hacked or compromised.

Manufacturers focus on performance and usability of IoT devices and they disregard safety measures and encryption techniques which is one of the main reason that these are being hacked frequently.

There is nothing much people can do to protect themselves from such threats unless the manufacturers timely secure and patch every security flaws or loopholes that might be present in their devices.

The only best way you can protect is to connect only those devices that are very necessary to the network and use a good firewall.

Make sure to keep your operating systems and software up-to-date, use good security product that protects all your devices within the network, and educate yourself about IoT products.
